Pediatric Dentist in South Barrington, IL

Our toolkit for easing little worries, ranging from giggle-inducing nitrous oxide to oral conscious sedation to general anesthesia at St. Alexius Medical Center- so every child can receive cares in the safest way possible.

Why Sedation Matters

Anxiety or special needs shouldn’t stand in the way of essential dental care. Sedation techniques allow children to receive thorough treatment, reduce movement for safer procedures, and create positive memories that build trust for future appointments.

What We Offer

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A mild, inhaled sedative that takes effect within minutes. Your child remains fully conscious, breathes on their own, and recovers quickly once the gas is turned off.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Administered as a liquid before the visit, this option provides deeper relaxation while still allowing your child to respond to verbal cues. Ideal for moderate anxiety or longer procedures. Not an option for all children, so consult with our pediatric dentists to see if this is an option for your child.

General Anesthesia at St. Alexius Medical Center

For complex full mouth rehabilitations or patients with special- needs considerations, we are proud to have OR privileges at a nearby top hospital. Under the care of a pediatric anesthesiologist, your child is asleep during the whole treatment. All treatments are completed in one visit under general anesthesia.

FAQs

Is nitrous oxide safe for toddlers?

Yes—nitrous oxide has an excellent safety record in pediatric dentistry and wears off within minutes.

What should I bring for a general anesthesia appointment?

Have the child wear loose clothing and bring your child’s favorite blanket or stuffed animal and any necessary medical records. Remember do not give your child anything to eat or drink after midnight or the pediatric anesthesia team can cancel the appointment.

How long before my child can eat after oral sedation?

We’ll give you specific instructions, but typically small sips of water and soft food after the oral sedation.
